Quick answer
Zoom usually follows the system default device, which is often not the one you want. You change the microphone, camera and speaker in `Settings > Audio` and `Settings > Video`, and you can make the same choice before joining a meeting on the preview screen. If the choice keeps reverting to the old device, the cause is usually a Windows default device setting or a driver.
How to recognize the problem
- Others hear you quietly or not at all, even though the microphone works in other programs
- Sound comes from the laptop instead of the headphones
- Zoom shows the built-in camera even though an external one is connected
- After connecting headphones, Zoom still uses the old device
- The device selection reverts to the previous one after restarting Zoom
Most common causes
Wrong device in Zoom
Zoom remembers the last selected device but changes it when a new one appears or the old one is disconnected. It then easily switches to the built-in microphone or speaker.
Windows default device
If the laptop speaker is set as the default device in Windows, Zoom in automatic selection mode follows that setting.
Device connected after Zoom starts
A USB camera or headphones connected during a meeting may not appear in the list immediately. Sometimes you need to reopen settings or restart Zoom.
Wrong audio source in the meeting
In a meeting, Zoom also has a button for choosing the speaker and microphone next to the microphone icon. If the wrong device is selected there, the choice from Settings is not applied.
Driver or permission
A camera without a proper driver or without app permission will not appear in the list, so Zoom stays on the built-in camera.
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Open settings before the meeting
Start Zoom and click the gear icon in the top right, or click your picture and then
Settings. If you are already in a meeting, click the arrow next to the microphone icon and chooseAudio Settings. Make changes before the meeting starts so you do not waste time. - 2
Choose the microphone and speaker
In
Settings > Audio, from theMicrophonedrop-down list choose the device you actually use, for example headphones or a USB microphone. Do the same in theSpeakerlist. Below the list, check the input level indicator while you speak and clickTest Speakerto hear a test tone. - 3
Turn off automatic adjustment
In the same window, turn off the automatic microphone adjustment option if the volume keeps changing. Set the level manually and leave
Background noise suppressiononAuto, unless others hear noise from your room. - 4
Choose the camera
Go to
Settings > Videoand from theCameralist choose an external camera if you have one. Below the list you see a preview, so check immediately whether the framing is good. If there is no picture, check whether another program is using the camera and close it. - 5
Check the selection in the meeting itself
When you join a meeting, click the arrow next to the microphone icon and check which devices are selected. Do the same on the arrow next to the camera icon. If the list differs from the one in Settings, select the device again in the meeting.
- 6
Set the Windows default device
If Zoom keeps reverting to the old device, open
Settings > System > Soundin Windows and set the desired microphone and speaker as default. Then select the same device again in Zoom; the choice is saved immediately. - 7
Check camera and microphone permissions
In Windows 11, open
Settings > Privacy & security > Cameraand make sure camera access is on and Zoom is in the list of allowed apps; check the same for the microphone inSettings > Privacy & security > Microphone. In Windows 10, openSettings > Privacy > CameraandMicrophone. On macOS, checkSystem Settings > Privacy & Security > CameraandMicrophone. - 8
Save the choice and test
Settings in Zoom apply immediately, so you can close the window as usual. Then start a test meeting with yourself or ask a colleague for a quick test. If everything is fine, the choice will be remembered for the next call too.
When you have multiple devices and multiple platforms
If you often change work locations, for example between the office and home, make a simple rule: the same USB port for the same camera and the same headphones. Windows usually remembers a device by port, so the choice is less likely to be lost. Zoom does not have separate device profiles, but before a meeting check the device list on the preview screen, where you can see both the picture and the sound level. For meetings in a large room, use an external speaker and microphone and check for feedback; you can disable built-in devices in Windows if you do not use them, so Zoom does not select them. If you also use Teams or Meet, check that the same devices are selected there too, because each app remembers its own choice.
How to prevent it
- Connect the camera and headphones before starting Zoom
- Test the microphone and camera before every important meeting
- Keep the same USB port for the same device
- Update the camera and headphone drivers occasionally
When to call a professional
If devices do not appear in the list even after a restart, if the camera disappears after a system update, or if your organization has multiple rooms and shared equipment, contact IT support to check drivers, permissions and policies on the computer.

Why does Zoom not see my microphone even though Windows recognizes it?
Usually another device is selected in Zoom or the microphone is in use by another program. Close other apps that use the microphone, then select the device again in `Settings > Audio` and check the sound level.
How do I choose a device before joining a meeting?
On the preview screen, before clicking the join button, click the arrow next to the microphone and camera icons. There you can select a device and immediately see the picture and sound level without joining the meeting.
Why does the device selection change by itself after a restart?
Zoom follows the default device in Windows and changes the selection when a new device appears or the old one is disconnected. Set the desired device as default in `Settings > System > Sound` and select it again in Zoom.
