The client had a good product, solid traffic and weak sales. Shoppers added products to the cart and gave up. The problem was not price or product, but the buying experience.
The problem
- 42% of carts were abandoned before checkout,
- navigation had too many levels, so shoppers could not find categories,
- checkout had five steps and mandatory registration,
- the mobile version was a shrunk desktop version.
Our approach
We measured first, then changed. Analytics and session recordings showed exactly where shoppers hesitated and left. Then we:
- Simplified navigation to two levels with clear category names.
- Reordered product page information: price, shipping and the buy button visible without scrolling.
- Cut checkout to three steps and allowed guest checkout.
- Showed shipping costs earlier, since a surprise at the end was the main reason for leaving.
- Designed mobile from scratch, with large buttons and autofill fields.
Each change was tested on a smaller sample before rolling out to everyone.
Results after four weeks
- completed purchases: +58%,
- time on site: +27%,
- bounce rate: down by almost a third,
- abandoned carts: from 42% to 18%.
Conclusion
UX is not decoration; it directly drives revenue. If you are planning a new store or redesigning one, see e-commerce development and check prices with the website cost calculator.
