Quick answer
Apple Account (Apple ID) is most often locked after multiple failed sign-in attempts or for security reasons. First try signing in at account.apple.com and reset your password via your phone number or rescue email. If the account is in recovery mode, access is restored only after a few days, and in simpler cases in about 24 hours, so do not try to interrupt that process.
How to recognize the problem
- Message that Apple ID is locked for security reasons
- Sign-in is rejected even though the password is entered correctly
- Confirmation is requested via another device or phone number
- iCloud and App Store ask you to sign in again, and data is not syncing
- Account is in recovery mode and access is delayed
Most common causes
Too many wrong passwords
After several failed attempts, Apple temporarily locks the account as protection against password guessing.
Password changed on another device
If the password was changed elsewhere, older devices may ask you to sign in again or show an error.
Two-factor authentication not completed
The verification code did not arrive on a trusted device or number, so sign-in remains incomplete.
Account flagged as compromised
Apple may lock the account if it notices suspicious activity or a sign-in from an unknown location.
Forgotten password and recovery information
Without a valid phone number or rescue email, the process of restoring access takes longer.
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Check the exact message text
Open
Settingsand, if you are signed in, tap your name at the top of the screen. If it says the account is locked or verification is required, note the exact text: a security lock message is resolved differently from a recovery mode message. Do not erase the account from the device right away. - 2
Try signing in via a browser
On a computer or in Safari, open
account.apple.comand try to sign in. If a forgotten password option appears, use it. Sometimes the account can be unlocked only by completing verification in the browser, without touching settings on the phone. - 3
Reset the password via a trusted device
On an iPhone or iPad already signed in to the account, go to
Settings> account name >Sign-In & Security>Change Password. If you are signed in, the new password is applied immediately on that device. If you are not signed in, use the forgotten password option on the website. - 4
Use the rescue phone number
When the system asks for verification, choose to receive a code by SMS on a trusted number or a notification on another Apple device. Enter the code in the field provided. If the code does not arrive, wait a few minutes and request a new one, but do not send requests repeatedly.
- 5
Start account recovery if offered
If an account recovery option appears during sign-in, accept it. Apple will send confirmation to your number or email and start a process that usually takes several days, and in simpler cases less. During that period, do not try to change the password or delete the account, as the deadline may be extended.
- 6
Check the rescue email
Open the inbox of the email address you used for the Apple Account and check the spam folder too. Recovery messages come from Apple domains and contain instructions with an expiration date. If the email address is no longer available, provide a new phone number in the recovery form.
- 7
Wait for the deadline to pass and sign in again
When the recovery process completes, you will receive a notification. Sign in with the new password at
account.apple.com, and then on each device where sign-in is requested. After signing in, check that iCloud data is syncing and that photos and contacts are in place. - 8
Remove unknown devices
Once you regain access, go to
Settings> account name and review the list of devices signed in to the account. Remove anything you do not recognize. Then change the password and, if needed, enable two-factor authentication.
If nothing helps
If the recovery process cannot be completed because you have access to neither the recovery number nor email, the remaining option is to contact Apple Support via support.apple.com. Prepare proof of purchase for the device, the serial number and as much account information as possible: the exact email address, creation date and devices that were signed in. Do not buy "Apple Account unlock" services online, as such services cannot legally restore account access and are often scams. If the device is locked to someone else's Apple Account, for example after buying a used phone, the previous owner needs to remove the device from their account. Erasing the device does not remove activation lock.
How to prevent it
- Enable two-factor authentication and add a trusted phone number
- Entrust account recovery to a trusted person or another device
- Do not share the Apple Account and password with multiple people
- Update contact information on the account when you change your number or email
When to call a professional
If you have access to no trusted device, phone number or rescue email, or if the account is tied to business data and shared services, contact IT support before attempting recovery so you do not extend the lock period.

How long does recovery of a locked Apple Account take?
When account recovery mode is started, access is usually restored after a few days, and in simpler cases in about 24 hours. The deadline may be extended if you try to change the password or interrupt the process in the meantime.
Will I lose data if I reset the password?
No. Changing the password does not delete data in iCloud or on the device. Photos, contacts and backups remain tied to the account and sync again after sign-in.
Can I unlock the account without a rescue phone number?
If you have access to neither a trusted number nor email, recovery through the automated process is often not possible. In that case, contact Apple Support with proof of purchase and account information.
