About this tool

The counter is useful for meta descriptions (up to 160 characters), social posts, essays and SEO articles. Reading time is based on an average of 220 words per minute.

The frequent words list helps you check whether your main keyword appears often enough, without overdoing it.

How a word and character counter works

The counter works simply: the text you paste is split into words by spaces and punctuation marks, and characters are counted in two modes, with and without spaces. This is an important difference, because platforms often limit exactly the number of characters with spaces. A 160 character meta description, for example, includes spaces too, so text that "looks short" can easily cross the limit.

The sentence count is obtained by recognizing periods, exclamation marks and question marks, and paragraphs are separated by line breaks. Reading time is a rough estimate based on average reading speed, so it is useful as a guide, not as a precise measure. If you are writing for an audience that reads carefully, or the text contains many numbers and technical terms, the actual time will be longer.

Tip to start: before you begin counting, clean the text of double spaces and empty lines. The tool counts them as characters, so your result will be inflated for no reason.

How many words should a blog post or meta description have

There is no universal number, but there are practical limits worth keeping in mind:

  1. Meta title: around 50 to 60 characters, because longer ones are often cut off in search results.
  2. Meta description: up to 160 characters, with spaces.
  3. Social media post: short, most often up to 200 to 300 characters if you want it fully visible without clicking "more".
  4. Blog post: length depends on the topic. A text of 600 to 900 words covers a simple topic well, while more demanding topics need more room for examples and explanations.
  5. Seminar paper: here the number of pages set by the professor is what counts, so use the counter to estimate whether you are close to the limit.

A practical approach: first write the text without thinking about the count, then measure it and shorten or expand it. Writing "to a number" usually leads to padding with words that have no substance.

Most common mistakes when counting text

The most common mistake is mixing up characters with and without spaces. If a platform says "up to 160 characters", check which mode it displays, because the difference can be around twenty characters.

The second mistake is relying on word count as a measure of quality. A 1,500 word text full of repetition will be worse than a 700 word text that clearly answers the question. The counter is a tool for controlling length, not for judging content.

The third mistake concerns the list of most common words. People see that their main keyword appears ten times and think that is good. Often it is not: natural text repeats conjunctions, prepositions and auxiliary verbs, and the keyword should appear where it makes sense, in the title, the first paragraph and an occasional subheading section.

Expert tip: if you are writing an SEO text, compare the list of most common words with your keyword plan. If only general words are at the top of the list, the text is probably not focused enough. If the main keyword appears in every sentence, you have overdone it and the text sounds unnatural.

How to use reading time and the list of most common words

Reading time helps you adjust the format. If the text takes longer than a few minutes, add subheadings and short paragraphs so the reader can follow more easily. For posts that should be read "on the go", short is better.

The list of most common words is also useful for spotting unconscious habits. If the same phrase keeps repeating in every text you write, that is a sign you need to vary your vocabulary. In translation and proofreading, the list quickly shows whether you have used the same term consistently or called the same thing three different ways.

When the counter shows that the job is bigger than mere measurement, for example when you need to align dozens of pages, meta descriptions and product descriptions, EVI Solutions can help with the technical side and automation. For everyday writing, it is enough to paste the text, measure it and adjust it before publishing.
