About this tool
llms.txt is a proposed standard for websites that want AI assistants to understand them better. While a sitemap serves search engines, llms.txt gives language models a concise, readable overview. It is part of a broader practice called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization): optimizing for AI answers, not just classic search results.
Besides llms.txt, many sites also publish llms-full.txt with the full text of key pages. Our site has both.
What is llms.txt and what is it for
llms.txt is a text file in Markdown format that is placed in the root of a site, at an address such as https://example.com/llms.txt. Its purpose is to offer large language models a short, structured overview of the site: who is behind it, what it does and which pages are the most important. Think of it as a business card for the site aimed at AI assistants.
Why is this needed? When an AI tool is given the task of finding out something about your company, it usually cannot read the entire site. Instead it looks for a few pages and tries to infer the context. If a clear list with descriptions is at hand, it will reach the right information faster and there is less chance it will misinterpret what you offer.
It is important to understand the difference compared to sitemap.xml. A sitemap is a machine readable list of addresses for search engines and says nothing about the content. llms.txt is written in human language and explains the meaning of the pages. That is why this practice is tied to GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), that is, optimization for how AI forms answers, and not only for positions in classic search.
How to create an llms.txt file
The file is written in plain Markdown, without special tools. A text editor is enough, and the generator on evi.rs only speeds up filling in the fields and assembling the structure.
The basic order is as follows:
- A first level heading with the name of the site or company.
- A short paragraph explaining what you do, for whom and where you operate.
- A list of links with a short description of each, grouped into logical units.
- Optionally, a note on what the site does not cover or what the terms of use for the content are.
A concrete example of an entry in the list:
- [Services](https://example.com/services): overview of software development and IT support services
- [Contact](https://example.com/contact): address, phone number and team working hours
Make sure the links are absolute, with a protocol, and that the description is one sentence that really says what is on the page. If you have a site in multiple languages, state that in the introduction and group the links by language.
Most common mistakes when creating an llms.txt file
The biggest problem is not the format, but the content. People often copy marketing slogans and phrases that mean nothing to a model. A sentence like "we are changing the rules of the game" helps no one, while "we develop mobile applications for banks and insurance companies" gives a clear signal.
Another common mistake is piling on hundreds of links. If the file contains every page of the site, it loses its purpose and becomes a worse sitemap. It is better to choose ten to thirty of the most important pages and describe them precisely.
The third mistake is falling out of date. When you change the structure of the site or your offering, llms.txt is left forgotten. Bring it into the same process as the sitemap, and update it with every major change.
The fourth mistake is the wrong type of content in the wrong place. llms.txt is for summaries and links, not entire page texts. For complete texts there is llms-full.txt, which is useful when you want the model to have access to the full content without visiting every page.
Tips for more advanced sites
If you have a large site with multiple sections, consider writing the descriptions from the user's point of view, not from the point of view of internal names. The model does not know what "Sector B2" means to you if that is not explained anywhere.
The second tip concerns credibility. State the exact company name, registered office and core activity as they appear in other sources. When the data matches what the model finds elsewhere, there is a greater chance it will cite you correctly.
Finally, check how the file looks in raw form, the way a machine sees it. Open the address in a browser and make sure there are no encoding errors and that the links are correct. When a site has several hundred pages, multiple languages and dozens of authors, maintaining an overview like this becomes serious work. In such situations EVI Solutions can help align the content structure and the technical foundation.
