Quick answer
Chrome profiles let you have two completely separate worlds in the same browser: one profile with a work Google account and another with a personal one. Each profile has its own bookmarks, passwords, history, extensions and signed-in sites, so data does not mix. Switching between profiles is one click in the top right corner of Chrome.
How to recognize the problem
- On your work computer you open personal Gmail and mix search history
- Work bookmarks appear at home, and vice versa
- Saved passwords for personal sites sit in a profile used by the whole office
- Work extensions slow down personal browsing and vice versa
- A colleague using the same computer sees your signed-in sites
Most common causes
Everything runs in one profile
By default, Chrome uses one profile that you sign into with one Google account. Everything you do in it, from history to passwords, belongs to that one account.
Sync transfers everything
When sync is on, bookmarks, passwords and extensions go to all devices where that account is signed in. That is how work bookmarks end up on your home computer.
Shared computer without separation
If multiple people use the same Windows account and the same Chrome profile, everyone sees the same signed-in sites, passwords and history.
Work account used for personal sites
Signing into personal services with a work Google account leaves traces in a profile that company administration can see or control.
Step-by-step fix
- 1
Open the profile manager
In Chrome, click the profile icon in the top right corner, next to the address bar. A panel opens with the current profile and a list of others. If the icon is hidden, check that the window is wide enough.
- 2
Add a new profile
In that panel, select
Add(orAdd profile). A new window opens asking if you want to sign in with a Google account. For the work profile, selectSign inand enter your work account; for the personal one, do the same with your personal account. - 3
Give profiles clear names
Click
Customize profileand enter a name like "Work" or "Personal", then choose a color or icon. That way you will know at a glance which profile you are in and avoid mistakes. - 4
Turn on sync only where you want it
In each profile, open
Settings>You and Googleand check the sync status. In the work profile, keep sync with the work account, and in the personal one with the personal account. Never sign the same account into both profiles. - 5
Create a shortcut for the work profile
If you use the computer primarily for work, in the profile manager create a shortcut for the work profile and use it to launch Chrome. This way you avoid opening your personal profile in front of a client.
- 6
Switch profiles with one click
Once the profiles are created, just click the profile icon and select the other profile. A new window opens with all the data of that profile. You can have both windows open at the same time.
- 7
Check what ended up where
Open bookmarks in each profile and check that they are in the right place. If you saved something incorrectly, you can move the bookmark manually or by exporting and importing via
Bookmark manager, optionsExport bookmarksandImport bookmarks. - 8
Remove extensions that do not belong to the profile
Open
chrome://extensionsin each profile and disable or remove extensions that are not intended for that context. Keep work extensions in the work profile and personal ones in the personal profile.
If you still mix profiles
If work and personal data are still mixing, check whether you signed the same Google account into both profiles. That is the most common cause: Chrome then syncs everything into one data set. Open Settings > You and Google in each profile and make sure the account and sync status are different. If needed, in one profile select Turn off for sync. Before deleting local data of that profile, export bookmarks and check that passwords are saved in the Google account, because deleting local data is irreversible. For companies that want central control, Chrome supports business policies through Google Workspace accounts, but that is set up by the administrator, not the end user.
How to prevent it
- Use different Google accounts for work and personal, never the same one in both profiles
- Give profiles names and colors that are immediately visible
- Occasionally check which extensions are enabled in which profile
- Do not sign into personal services in the work profile
When to call a professional
If the computer is shared by multiple employees, if the company is managed by a Google Workspace administrator, or if you suspect that work data is available on a personal account, it is better to leave profile and account setup to IT support.

Do profiles share passwords and bookmarks?
No, if they are signed into different Google accounts. Each profile has its own passwords, bookmarks, history and extensions. If you notice that data is still mixing, check whether the same account is signed into both profiles.
Can I delete a profile without losing data?
You can, but first export bookmarks and check that passwords are saved in the Google account or export them. Deleting a profile removes the local data of that profile from the computer. If sync was on, the data remains in the Google account.
Is incognito mode enough for personal use?
Incognito mode does not keep history and cookies, but it does not separate accounts, bookmarks or passwords. For permanent separation of work and personal, a separate profile with its own account is better.
